The weather is starting to warm up and we are all enjoying the beautiful sunshine. When heading out to have some fun in the sun, don’t forget to protect your little one’s skin from the harsh UV rays. Your child’s skin is precious and delicate, protecting their skin from the sun is one of the most important things you can do as a parent. Sunscreen is not an option, it is a necessity when it comes to shielding your skin from those dangerous rays. Did you know, just one sunburn can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life?
Sunscreen isn’t something you only use when you are relaxing at the beach or spending a day in the sun. Going for a long walk, playing at the park, or even in your own backyard can cause sunburn if your child isn’t protected from the sun. So lather up before you head out and be sure to use the right stuff! When choosing the right sunscreen for your child, look for one that protects from broad spectrum UVA and UVB rays and has an SPF of at least 15 to 30. Also, make sure it is water resistant, hypoallergenic, and fragrance free. Be sure to reapply often and make sure you are using enough. It’s easy to forget to reapply especially when you are busy having so much fun, a helpful hint is to set your phone alarm as a reminder. The recommended amount to apply is a shot glass full. That may seem like a lot, but that’s what is needed to protect your child from the sun, so just do it.
Lastly, covering up with a lightweight long sleeve shirt is also a way to protect your child’s skin from the sun. While you’re headed out to soak up some vitamin D, don’t forget to cover up or lather up!
